PETERITE AGM/Christmas Party
The Peterite Old Boys Union of NSW, their families and friends ushered in Christmas in style at the Thornleigh Community Centre on Sunday, November 29.
Chris Pietersz handling the music with his usual style and grace, put the large crowd into the Christmas mode, belting out traditional songs to keep the toes a tapping.
An impromptu children’s choir, led by Chris and Lawrie Machado, got the crowd joining in for the yuletide favourites before Santa Claus made his appearance to the delight of the several children and handed over presents.
No Sri Lankan function is complete without a sumptuous meal and that was provided by Cheryl’s whose Peterite connection not only includes her brother Guinn Ragel but also husband……and in-laws, all loyal college boys.
Before the annual Christmas party, the association sat down for the important task of electing the new committee for 2009/2010.
John Rajpal Wickremeratne graciously accepted the task of guiding the OBU after being elected unopposed at the AGM, attended by more than 20 members. He was a student at St Peters from 1964 to 1975.
Taking over from Gerard Velyuthan, Wickremeratne – who served as treasurer previously - said he would spare no effort in maintaining the high standards the association has set.
He thanked Velyuthen and the rest of the past committee members whose efforts have produced the first-ever scholarship program for St Peters, with 12 students benefiting each year, among other positive activities. He urged old Peterites to become members as the Committee revamps a membership drive in 2010.
Velyuthen was persuaded to stay on as a committee member along with several others. Senani Gunasekera, back to his usual energetic self after his heart operation a few months ago, will continue serve as vice-president though Winston Velyuthan stepped down, saying it was time for new faces.
There a few new faces including treasurer Shanoi Fernando who didn’t not hesitate when nominated while Ron Pieris will stay on as secretary.
Mario Sapramadu, the auditor, approved the financial statement of 2008/09 and agreed to stay on in that role.
The new committee, with input from the other members, also agreed to restart the membership fees from next year, with $20 being the annual amount.
However, it was stressed that the fees were not all important but rather the involvement of all Peterites in NSW and their families. The committee said the OBU is for the past students of St Peters making it a 'must join' organisation for the old boys.
A regular email newsletter will also be sent out to all members and anyone having any items of interest to the college network may send them to lawmach@hotmail.com for possible inclusion.
It is planned to link this newsletter and our website to the other college associations around the world.
